Artist Statement

I created this piece in response to the reopening of the museum Poster House, as they prepared to reopen in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  I was inspired to create this piece while interning over the summer at Poster House. Poster House is a museum that showcases poster artwork in New York City, one of the only museums in the United States dedicated to this medium. I was really inspired throughout my internship with them by the Swiss Grid show they were currently running and preparing to reopen. One of the posters showcased in this show was a poster titled “Giselle” by Armin Hoffman. I loved the simplicity that comes with the Swiss Grid style of work, which iterates repetition and structure brought by this style of graphic design. In Hoffman’s piece, he uses a strong, bold sans-serif typeface on the left-hand side, contrasted by a black and white image of a dancer on the right. When thinking of inspiration for this piece, I knew I wanted to incorporate photos of hands being washed, a mask, and something that represented social distancing, which later became a ruler. The final product was very similar to his original piece, which fit perfectly with the audience at Poster House that I was trying to relay these crucial messages to.
