Artist Statement
Tim works in oil paint, and uses texture and color to convey form as well as emotion. His pieces in this show are from two assignments, the first of which being a “self portrait” that does not literally depict himself. He has chosen to depict himself as a silk flower still life, suggesting the personas put on to keep others impressed and entertained, regardless of what he is truly feeling. His mark making and use of saturated color conveys the energetic and bright attitude he keeps up for those around him.
His second work in the show is from an assignment to create a surreal representation of a dream. He has chosen to recreate a dream in which he was seated in the corner of a large room, watching piles of couches and chairs glide around, crashing into one another and rising up in the center of the room. He once again uses color and texture to create the feeing of space, and uses layered and removed paint to recreate the sensation of bright city lights outside the windows of the space he was in.
About Tim
Tim Kennedy is a senior Art major (BA) with a minor in sociology at Ithaca College. He is originally from the Northern Virginia area. His main medium in the arts is oil painting, with smaller focuses in drawing and printmaking. His muses this last year have included bright, vivid colors and high contrast images, as well as the idea of turning traditional ideas of taste and beauty on their heads. Previous series have included examining fake flowers as subjects to critique “natural” beauty, as well as depicting gay men and flowers in a celebration of visible effeminate joy.
