Artist Statement

From a young age I remember carrying around my small, baby blue camera wherever I went. Taking photographs of my friends and family soon turned into taking photographs of the beautiful landscapes of Montauk, New York. Growing up in a small, beach town gave me plenty of inspiration. It would often get abandoned in the winter which inspired me to focus my work on the seclusion felt during the off season. I continued to explore this idea when I got to Ithaca. The quiet towns of upstate New York gave me landscapes that I was able to use to form my photographic style. I wanted to begin observing the things that I pass by daily without notice. In this diptych, I try to show small, almost insignificant moments to highlight the idea of being misplaced and alone. I wanted to focus on finding little complexities in simplicity.

About Alyssa

Alyssa Jacoby is a senior Film, Photography and Visual Arts major at Ithaca College. Photography has always been a passion for Alyssa. Ever since she was young, she would always be spotted with a camera in hand. While she works a lot in digital, she will always have her point and shoot film camera on her just in case a moment arises. She normally focuses on landscape photography but will do headshots and portraits for friends and family. Her photography inspirations include Martin Parr, Sophie Calle, Irving Penn, Todd Hido, Sze Tsung Leong and her uncle James Katsipis. From a young age, she remembers going to her uncle’s photography galleries or looking at her uncle’s work at their family restaurant and being motivated to do the same thing. Jacoby enjoys taking pictures of her surroundings whether they be new or old. She will often drive around to explore new places and get inspired by what she sees around her. When going abroad in London, one of the things she was most excited for was having new places to photograph. While she loves travel photography and exploring new towns, she has soft spot for her hometown Montauk, New York which was the first subject of her photography.
