Artist Statement

at the center of before and after is a series created through need.

In March of 2020 I got my first real camera, a Nikon D80, while I was home in Tyngsborough for a few days on spring break. I was in my apartment in Ithaca when I received an email that Ithaca College would extend our spring break, and that we would move to remote learning for
two weeks. After that, I did what was normal. I went to parties, I went to bars with friends, and I worked on my friend’s student film. Yet, I had this overwhelming feeling that things were about to change, beyond two weeks. I never experienced a feeling like that in my life, to be aware that everything was about to change and that nothing was going to be the same. I wanted to capture that feeling, capture what other people were doing, and see if everyone else was freaking out. Beyond that faint anxiety, I was thrilled in a way too. I took that new camera out and shot what I could, during what I now consider “the first week” of the pandemic. However, I was a shy photographer, what I really wanted to do was photograph people, but it ended up being more about the buildings around Ithaca.

About Teresa

Teresa Gelsomini is a multidisciplinary artist from Tyngsborough Massachusetts, graduating in May with a BFA in Acting from Ithaca College. Teresa’s affinity for photography started young, creating scrapbooks for herself and her seven siblings, and looking through photo albums her grandmother made. Teresa views photography as a means to archive. In her mind, it’s an art that relies on this mix of feelings coming together- the spontaneity of need (the need to capture certain moments), the discipline to take a photo, and the intuition that comes with framing and trusting the way she sees the world. Teresa as a photographer would describe her work as archival storytelling. Trained as an actor, but self-taught as a photographer, this melding of disciplines leads to new ways for Teresa to tell stories, to listen to her feelings, and to express herself. Teresa can be seen wandering around Ithaca with various bags, and various cameras.
